Hanne Fjerdingby Olsen

Hanne Fjerdingby Olsen

Postdoktor

  • Avl, genetikk og matproduksjonssystemer

I have a tenure track position at the Faculty of Biosciences (BIOVIT), where I am developing our research and education on the sustainability of food systems, with the main focus on livestock production systems. I am PI of the project LIVESTOCK (2019-2023, https://app.cristin.no/projects/show.jsf?id=685842), financed by the Research Council of Norway, where we are documenting the sustainability of Norwegian livestock production systems by using life cycle assessment (LCA), including environmental, economic, and social aspects.

Also, I am WP leader in these exciting projects financed by the Research Council of Norway:

Together with associate professor Ola Westengen (LANDSAM), I lead the NMBU arena for sustainable food systems (2022-2025). The arena will unite the research and education concerning food and sustainability across the seven faculties at NMBU. We will stimulate internal and external communication and through transdisciplinarity, we will explore and develop research ideas and educate young people for understanding our current and future food systems.

I am a part of the NMBU talent program "Research Talents for Sustainability" 2021-2022 (Website). The activities in the program have been somewhat delayed due to the covid pandemic, and some of my planned travels will continue also in 2023.

Teaching
Since 2018, I have developed and established three courses here at NMBU:

LNG250, 5 ECTS, Academic writing course (autumn parallel)
SDG200, 5 ECTS, Sustainable Food Production Systems (spring parallel)
SDG300, 5 ECTS, Sustainable Development Goals in Plant and Animal Food Systems (January block)

Currently, I am applying for establishing a master's program in sustainable food systems, in collaboration with the other faculties at NMBU, starting in 2023.

Also, together with SEVU and colleagues at BIOVIT, I am developing a pedagogic tool for sustainability learning about food systems. The tool will give students the opportunity to explore an example of a food system, with simple mechanisms for e.g. trade-offs and burden shifting. The funding will cover a pilot version to be used in the education for sustainable food production and the ambition is to apply for funding to further develop a full version of the tool.

I hold a Ph.D. in animal breeding and genetics, and in the period 1999-2018 my research was mainly on horse breeding and management of genetic variation in the Norwegian horse breeds.
