[PHOTO MISSING]The excursion to UMB was part of the President's visit in Norway. Norway has played and still plays an important part in the rebuilding of Burundi after the civil war ten years ago. The President's journey to Norway underlines this good relationship.
President Nkurunziza said that Norway and Burundi have had good connections for quite some time and that this had been obvious through the support Norway has given to working towards peace and rebuilding the country after the civil war.
Focus on environment and climate
The President was informed on UMB's close cooperation with African countries, including Tanzania and Uganda, in research and teaching.
The President also attended two lectures that were relevant for Burundi. The first concerned the relationship between forest management and climate changes while the second dealt with the production of biofuels.
The Rector, Knut Hove, saw possibilities and challenges in a possible cooperation with Burundi. Burundi has considerable challenges in meeting own demands for energy and food. The discussions they had had indicated that UMB may be able to help, but Burundi is no great receiver of aid from Norge. The mechanisms that strengthen such a cooperation have to be in place before a cooperation can be effected. He felt that UMB can contribute answers to many of the questions that the President brought with him from home.
