Areas of research interest are in energy transitions, and energy security and energy justice in emerging economies with large share of biomass in the energy mix. Experience from assessment of “appropriate” (and not-so-appropriate) energy technologies developed for use in households, institutions, and small- and medium enterprises use in the Global South: biofuels, improved cookstoves, ‘clean cooking’, biogas, LPG, multifunctional platforms. Also, national-level planning in Tanzania of supply and distribution systems for LPG (e.g. Pay-as-you-go), grid and off-grid electricity; sector development considering energy security. Recently working with Cicero on project in Tanzania; looking at narratives in the development-led efforts to modernize energy use; energy use and gender from a social practice theoretical perspective; modelling of climate impact of transitioning from biomass-based to a “cleaner” energy mix.
