I am currently supporting an international Whole Institution Approach (WIA) to Sustainability project commissioned by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). The project is developing a policy framework for a WIA on sustainability in all member states.
I hold a Doctorate in Educational Science/pedagogikk. The PhD study focused on co-developing professional learning practices with school and university based stakeholders. Together, we developed a whole institution approach as a thinking tool for sustainability-oriented educational change in practice. In the Norwegian curriculum context this includes education for health and wellbeing, global citizenship education and education for sustainability.
The role that relational reflexivity, creativity and participatory education have in supporting social and environmental justice is a red thread throughout my work. This is shaped by my background in environmental art, forest school teaching and photography.
A Whole Institution Approach (also known as a Whole School Approach) provides a framework for re-orienting and redesigning education considering emerging global socio-ecological sustainability challenges. It invites a holistic, systemic, co-creative, and reflexive effort by all stakeholders involved in education to meaningfully engage students in complex sustainability challenges. More on this approach in the school context can be found here in English, and info in Norwegian is available here.
