The master thesis is a minor research task (30 ECTS) and an important part of the specialization.
Choice of topic
The process of selecting your master’s thesis topic should start at least six months prior to the submission of the master thesis. The School of Economics and Business publishes the list of the suggested topics on the homepage here.
Information seminar about the thesis
The seminar will be held in the beginning of January of the last semester. The seminar focuses on the methodological approaches with emphasis on data analysis, research design and use of literature.
Choice of topic and allocation of supervisors
The process of selecting your master’s thesis topic should start at least six months prior to the submission deadline.
Check if the topics suggested by the School of Economics and Business are of interest. Email with guidelines and application form "Thesis - application for supervisor" are sent to the NMBU student address. Supervisors are then allocated on the basis of submitted topics/issues by the students. It is assumed that students have completed around 90 ECTS before the writing of the master thesis begins.
If you are going to write master thesis in Spring semester, the deadline for application for supervisor is on the 1st of October.
If you are going to write master thesis in Autumn semester, then the deadline for application for supervisor is on the 1st of February.
Contract between the student (s) and supervisor (s) about master thesis and timetable for degree tasks
Before starting the work on the master thesis a more specific work plan / contract is prepared in collaboration with the counselor. The contract shall be submitted by the 1st of December for those who will submit master thesis in Spring semester or on the 1st of May for those who will submit their master thesis in the Autumn semester. It is possible to have two supervisors, however, the main supervisor must be employed in an academic position, as an adjunct professor or adjunct associate professor, at NMBU. In cases where there are several supervisors, each supervisor's responsibilities must be clearly specified in the agreement. Use the form Contract - thesis.
Registration in StudentWeb
You must register for the master’s thesis via StudentWeb as for other courses at Norwegian University of Life Sciences. The code is M30-ECON for students in the master programme in Economics. Registration/withdrawal deadline is: 15. September (for those who will submit their master thesis in the autumn semester) or 1. February (for those who will submit their master thesis in the Spring semester).
Upon submission
The deadline for thesis submission is the 15th of May, at 15.00 for those who write their master thesis in the Spring semester (December 15th, for those who write their master thesis in the Autumn semester). The thesis is to be delivered in 3 soft bound copies (4 in cases where there are two supervisors).
Use the NMBU front page template. Make sure you write School of Economics and Business on the front page.
All of NMBU’s students are to post their Master thesis in Brage. When you submit your thesis at the School of Economics and Business you are to hand in a receipt that verifies that you have posted your thesis in Brage.
When you submit your thesis you first visit the Student Informataion Centre (SiT) where the thesis is registered and stamped. Bring along the receipt you receive from Brage. SiT gets 1 copy of your thesis. You hand in the remaining 2 copies at the reception of the School of Economics and Business (3 if you have 2 supervisors; that is a total of 4 copies).
You are also to fill in a registration form for thesis submission.
In cases when the thesis is confidential you fill in a form for confidential master thesis.
