I am Professor in Nuclear Chemistry/Environmental Chemistry at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences, previously director of the NFR Centre of Excellence for Environmental Radioactivity (CERAD) and currently Deputy Director of the Norwegian Nuclear Research Centre (NNRC) at the University of Oslo. I have worked on the environmental impacts of ionising radiation for nearly 40 years, including the Chornobyl and Fukushima accidents. Recent projects include research on the heath and environmental impacts of new generation nuclear reactors, armed conflicts and nuclear weapons, and the application of AI in emergency preparednes. I have studied the social and ethical aspects of radiation risks since 1992, and my research and teaching fosters an interdisciplinary approach that integreates science with ethical decision-making. I am currently Norway's Alternate Representative to the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR), was a member of UNESCO’s World Commission on the Ethics of Scientific Knowledge and Technology (COMEST) from 2015-2022, and a member of the All European Academies (ALLEA) Permanent Working Group on Science and Ethics.
