Limits of class size:
For practical and animal welfare reasons for the teaching animals the maximal number of students per course is 12. The course may be done twice in a year if the students ask.

Course contents:
This is a voluntary differentiation course, open for all differentiation specializations. The course is 1 week and is plassed in the fall semsester of the differentiation year.
Learning outcome:
Objectives and content
To create interesse and knowledge about the varied rolls a lab animal veterinarian has. We look at what career oportunities there are for vetrinarians in lab animal science and teach the students to start to think critical and ethical like a scientist. To increase the students competanse in practical handling and simple methods (like for example blook sampling methods and injection methods) and surgical methods (like for example OVHV and dental extraction) on rabbits, rats and mice. In addition we get to know these species, not jurst as lab animals, but also pets.
Programme
This course is a flipped classroom. That means that the students views the lectures as instructionvideos and the go through the curriculum themselves. The flipped sessions with the teacher will be used to go through the assignments, discussion and practical work with the animals and kadavers.
Part 1: Laboratory animal science
We work into the subject and look espesially on what kind of rolls a lab animal veterinarian can have.
Part 2: Clinical examination/techniques on live animals
We work on clinical examination and simple techniques (like for example blook sampling methods and injection methods) on rabbits, rats and mice.
Part 3: Surgical methods
We work on surgical methods (like for example OVHV and dental extraction) on cadavres of rabbits, rats and mice.
Learning activities:
This course is a flipped classroom. That means that the students views the lectures as instructionvideos and the go through the curriculum themselves. The flipped sessions with the teacher will be used to go through the assignments, discussion and practical work with the animals and kadavers.
Teaching support:
The block leader is available to the students by telephone and e-mail during the time when the students work independently and will be attending the flipped sessions.

Prerequisites:
Completed 1-9. semester of the veterinary medicine program
Recommended prerequisites:
The previous courses in the study programme and subjects that are mandatory to admission to NMBU.
Mandatory activity:
Attendance at the flipped sessions (1, 2 and 3) is mandatory and reqires active participation.
Assessment:
There is no exam in this course.
Nominal workload:
30 hours.
Entrance requirements:
Admitted to the Veterinary Medicine Program and completed 1-9. semester of the veterinary medicine program
Type of course:
The duration of the course is 1 week. 1 hour for introduction, flipped session 1 is 4 hours, flipped session 2 is 7 hours, flipped session 3 is 4 hours and a closing session for 1 hour. The remaining time is used for the students independent studies.
Examiner:
On the basis of attendance and active participation on the flipped sessions the block leader will gade pass / not passe. Sensure will be given on the lasts course day. Extern sensor will not be used.
