Course contents:

Contents

Theoretical teaching and practical / clinical exercises when it comes to artificial insemination in cattle. In addition, the theoretical background for insemination of sheep and pigs.

Learning outcome:
Provide basic practical knowledge in insemination of bovine animals in order to provide the students with sufficient ability to preform inseminations independently for Geno after completion of the course. 
Learning activities:

Practical part:

Train practical insemination in the cow.

Learn correct treatment of semen before insemination: Thaw the semen, mount the inseminator

Theoretical part:

Reproductive physiology in the cow, main focus on the oestral cycle and optimal time for insemination.

Anatomy of the reproductive organs

Endocrine regulation of reproduction in the cow

Hygiene related to insemination work

Reporting procedures (Geno)

Information about Geno AS and the breeding program in Geno (Geno) 

Short introduction to the sexual cycle and insemination in the sow

The course includes

1. Two hours information and training on organs at Campus Adamstua prior to the course

2. 4-5 days insemination training at a slaughterhouse. Number of days depend on the routines at the slaughterhouse that week, this varies. There will be training on organs and live animals.

There is varying access to training animals on the slaughterhouses. We never know in advance how a week will be and must be flexible and adapt to the routines at the slaughterhouse. Theoretical teaching will largely take place during periods without access to animals. There is a big difference between how fast students acquire practical skills. Therefore, we cannot guarantee that the individual student will receive sufficient training through the course to obtain an approved course.

Syllabus:
Reproductive physiology in the bovine and porcine.
Prerequisites:

The following students can apply the course:

1. Candidates with Differentiation in Production animal medicine and food safety.

2. Candidates with other differensiations that can document that they have a job offer with insemination practices.

3. Candidates that has passed VET334, VET336 and VET316

It refers to specialt guidelines for requirements for applications / grants and application forms.

Recommended prerequisites:
Training in palpation of reproductive organs in the cow
Mandatory activity:
The whole course included the introduction at Campus Adamstua
Assessment:

Approval of the course - requirements for passing

It will be the overall impression through the course that determines whether the course is approved (Pass / Fail). This is decided by the course leader. Among other things, there will be an evaluatipn whether the student manages to place the inseminator in the right place within acceptable time.

If you do not achieve sufficient skills through the course, you get a conditional approval. This means that you get a course certificate, but are blocked in the system in Geno until further notice. Depending on how much extra training is needed, you need to get organized additional training where afterwards it can be documented that the skills are sufficient, or take a new course.

Safety rules set limits on the number of participants per course. Students must abide by the rules at the slaughterhouse and guidance of teaching.
