Course contents:
All students are required to arrange 3 weeks of practical training with a licensed veterinarian.
The School Board has resolved that completion of all three weeks of training must be documented before the degree in veterinary medicine can be awarded. The practical training may be carried out in Norway or abroad.
Practical training cannot be undertaken before the student has completed the 5th semester of study. The practice may be dealt into four periods of one week each, one week being the equivalent of five working days. Practice may be taken during holidays or reading weeks.
Students wishing to apply for a temporary licence after they have completed their 9th semester, must have completed 3 weeks of practice.
Production animals must be the main focus here, but some mixed practice work with an ambulatory horse clinic or companion animals can be accepted.
Companion animal practice must be carried out at a clinic large enough to allow students to gain experience of working with companion animals all day, on a daily basis. The same applies to ambulatory horse practices or horse clinics.
During this week students may chose to work with production animals, companion animals, horses, fish, food safety, or with some other relevant area such as laboratory work, laboratory animals, veterinary public practice etc. No form of financial compensation will be made to the student or the veterinarian in connection with the practical training period. The credits that students receive for this practice are counted as part of the 7th semester work-load.
Learning outcome:
The purpose of the practice is that students should see something other than the Veterinary College. It is a "observer practice", meaning no requirement for activity from students.

If an additional premium has to be paid to obtain coverage, the Norwegian School of Veterinary Science can refund this amount upon provision of the appropriate receipts. NMBU recommend the students to obtain their own riskinsurance.
