Week 1: Clinic management, Health and Safety in the work place. An introduction to clinic management, principles of prafatibility and inter-professional team work.

Themes that will be reviewed this week is:

  • Prices, basic economy, profits
  • Insurance
  • Drugs and drug management
  • Team work in inter-professional teams
  • Consulation and communication
  • The Norwegian Vets Association
  • HMS in the work place

Week 2: Management and teamwork

Topics that will be covered are:

  • Leadership theories 
  • Group processes, as a leader and team member
  • Trust and conflict management
  • Team roles and team development

The course provides knowledge and skills on current issues relevant for the students regarding team work and leadership in their later work careers. The course combines theoretical perspectives with experiential learning, allowing students to receive both practical and theoretical understanding of the relevant issues through lectures, exercises and group work. The course will in this respect also provide a high degree of personalized learning, where each student has the opportunity to think systematically through what it means to lead and work as a veterinarian.

Learning outcome:

The course will provide students with an introduction to the working life as a veterinarian, where the vet can enter one or multiple roles as employee, self-employed, manager, clinic owners and professionals. The veterinarian must exercise this in interaction with colleagues, managers, employees, clients and other professionals, veterinary nurses in particular.

The block forms the basis so that the student after completing the course will master the following «Day one skills» by EAEVE: 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5, 1.7, 1.8, 1.9, 1.10, 1.11, 1.12

A) After completing the course the student should:

  • Be reflective in relation to a leadership role as a veterinarian. This involves having thought through their own behavior in groups, learned about typical group processes and handling of important topics such as confidence-building and conflict management.

B) After completing the course the student should:

  • Be well oriented about the society and working life he/she will meet after they complete their studies and in that way be able to make a conscious and wise career choice.
Learning activities:
Both weeks will be held together with the veterinary nurse students in an inter-professional learning environment. There will be some lectures but mostly the learning will be through discussions, group activities with role playing and problem solving. There may be certain individual lectures where the two student groups are seperated. Hence, there will be a combination of theoretical teaching combined with practical and student active teaching sessions.

Mandatory activity:
All sessions and lectures are obligatory. If a student has valid absence exceeding one day a written assignment will have to be completed. Any invalid absence will have to be re-taken the following year.

The student will give a presentation within a theme of the two week course.. The presentations must be passed in order to pass the course.
