Environment and Natural Resources, Ecology and Management of Natural Resources.
The course is an additional module to VANN300. The focus is on the pollution ipressures of water bodies (primarily lakes), and on what can be done by measures in the catchment area (remediation) and also in the water body (restoration). The current condition is documented and the pollution problem is mapped. The cause of the pollution state of the water body must be described.
Furthermore, the course is divided into two parts: Catchment basin analysis and water source analysis. Appropriate measures to reduce pollution inputs from the catchment area are identified. If it turns out that measures in the catchment area are not sufficient, suitable methods for lake restoration shall be proposed.
The teaching in VANN301 uses colloquia as a form of work. Groups of 3-5 students work together. A specific lake that is in a moderate state (or worse) regarding pollution are considered. The course is adapted so that it is possible to complete VANN301 at the same time as MINA300 or FMI309 / 310.
Students should be able to assess pollution inputs to water bodies, and be able to propose relevant measures to improve the condition of this. Measures in the catchment basin and water source are to be carefully selected (using tools and your skills as gained from i.e. VANN200, VANN210, VANN211, VANN300, and possibly VANN311). Students should also be able to write a comprehensive report on the water quality and suitable measures, which can be used by the administration / Water Area.
The course consists of 7-8 joint colloquia where the teachers are present, as well as colloquium work for the students. The students presents catchment and lake info along the way, and assess in dialogue with the teachers the specific challenges.
Student and teacher work closely together. Relevant literature is published on Canvas. Other relevant support / literature sources (reports / articles) are sought by students and / or disseminated by teachers through colloquia. It is also expected that contact will be made with people in the relevant water areas.
