Course contents:
The course provides an introduction to modelling and simulation of selected energy and process operations. A training in the simulation tool Aspen plus / HYSYS and how results are presented will be given. The tool can be used to calculate / simulate simple processes, but also more advanced processes which is not possible to work manually. Simple processes can also be assembled into more advanced processes to simulate large compound processes. The tool is also suitable to visualize processes, draw flowcharts and produce mass and energy balances and this will be discussed in the course. Process optimization and how state variables such as pressure and temperature affects processes will also be taught. A larger project-task will be integrated in the couse where the tools should be used on a specific task. Relevant topics here can be applied within energy physics, bioenergy, geothermal heat, biorefining, district heating.
Learning outcome:
After completing the course, students will be able to use computer simulation tools to simulate processes, visualize processes and mass and energy balances.

Lectures with simulation exercises on a computer, as well as solution of their own task are used

The teacher/s is/are available for extra support and advice during office hours, and can also be reached by telephone and e-mail.

Prerequisites:
Completed at least three years of studies
Recommended prerequisites:
FYS 251 - Heat transfer and energy, FYS210 - Hydrodynamics/ TPS210 - Engineering Fluid Mechanics.
Mandatory activity:
Compulsory exercises and an individual project report
Assessment:
The course is assessed on the basis of the best eight subtasks and final report from the project.
