The course will concentrate on road construction pavement design, operation and maintenance of roads. The following points will be discussed on the course: - Pavement design: flexible pavement, rigid pavement and pavement structure - Drainage of roads: requirement, design, control and documentation. - Road surfacing: asphalt technology, properties, requirement and quality control - Functionalities of road pavements such as bearing capacity, rutting, evenness, friction, acoustical properties, special winter conditions, etc. - Road maintenance and winter operation of roads - reinforcement of roads as well as surfacing maintenance. - Frost and road construction - mechanism, remedy to avoid frost damage.
The student shall obtain a good overview of the art of road construction and will be able to perform basic design of roads/highways according to established Norwegian practice. The student shall also obtain knowledge of operation and maintenance of highways. The student will furthermore secure a good basis for further study of design of highways.

Structured teaching is 65 hours (5h/week)
The external and internal examiner jointly prepare the exam questions and the correction manual. The external examiner reviews the internal examiner's examination results by correcting a random sample of candidate¿s exams as a calibration according to the Department's guidelines for examination markings.
