Course contents:

This is a feed manufacturing course which includes both traditional and novel ingredients for compound feed, related to both terrestrial production animals and fish, striving for nutritional progress. 

The demand for sustainable ingredients in the animal production area puts a pressure on us to develop practical applicable and highly scientific processed feed, to fully utilize the potential of the raw materials. The purpose of this course is to gain in-depth knowledge of how and why different key processes and equipments are installed and used in feed production plants. The objective is that the students will be able to understand the principles used for key processes and to optimise these processes through discussions with factory personnel and scientists. The above mentioned outcome will be combined with nutritional knowledge, e.g. to understand at which temperatures different proteins are being modified during extrusion, and which components can be added to adjust such structural changes.

Content

The core of the course is the experimental work (seminar) at the Centre for Feed Technology, supported by lectures. The students will have to read literature, both up front, and after the course days at Aas. Then the final part of the course is to write a report about the experimental work with feed processing.

Programme Outline

  • Up front: Literature study, and finding main interest point
  • At the venue:
    • Monday: Mainly lectures, plus visit to the Centre for Feed Technology.
    • Tuesday - Thursday: Experimental work (seminar) and lectures at the Centre for Feed Technology
    • Friday: Visit to a commercial feed plant, and final lectures
  • Afterwards: Literature study and writing of report. Report to be handed in 4 weeks after last day at Aas.
Learning outcome:
The course will focus on skills and competence, as knowledge will be a prerequisite.  Skills: To understand the opportunities and constraints in feed processing. This both related to amout of moisture possible to add in the different processes, the effects of soluble proteins, and how to change the set up to overcome such. Competence: The ability to transfer feed making among species and equipment, resulting in feed of best nutritional quality.
Learning activities:
In the big picture is the question, how to EAT. As demonstrated during the EAT days in Stockholm, June 2015, there is also a push in the public to make use of more sustainable feed resources. This "big picture" thinking is one pedagogical approach. Another is "learning by doing". A third is extensively use of group work. This ensure that the Nordic dimension will be ensured afterwards too, as the students can get a network in this region.
Syllabus:
The students will receive the reading list in due time.
Recommended prerequisites:
Knowledge of animal nutrition and feed technology and understanding of food chemistry. For those not well known in Feed technology, we suggest to take the intensive course HFE305 Feed Manufacturing Technology up front, which takes place during two weeks in August.
Mandatory activity:
Participation on the on-site course.
Assessment:
The students will be evaluated by their report.
Nominal workload:
  • 30 hours seminar (i.e. experimental work)
  • 20 hours lecture
  • 60 hours independent work, e.g. literature study, and preparing for the report.
  • 40 hours other: Writing a report of the experimental work done at NMBU; i.e. describing the feed processing, results obtained and discussing those. Literature handed out during the course must be used to evaluate the experiment.
Entrance requirements:

Good knowledge of animal nutrition, and understanding of food chemistry.

This course is a joint Nordic NOVA PhD course organised by Olav Fjeld Kraugerud, Department of Animal and Aquacultural Sciences. Teachers and researchers from NMBU and the Swedish Agricultural University (SLU) teach on the course.
