Course contents:
The course provides a general introduction to the challenges associated with growth in a finite world and looks at effects of prehistoric agriculture on atmospheric carbon and the global climate. Furthermore, the principles for a more climate-smart agriculture are discussed, and historic environmental impacts of agriculture are assessed. The course then looks specifically at agriculture's impact on water quality and soil productivity and then the possibilities for increased production, climate gas mitigation and adaptation in a changing climate. Finally the possibilities to produce food for 10 billion people in 2050 and opportunities to increase yields in areas with low productivity are analyzed. The course examines challenges associated with food production and encourages creative, individual thinking with a focus on solutions.
Learning outcome:
The students shall be able to appraise the sustainability of high and low input agriculture under different economical and ecological conditions. The students shall also be able to propose principal changes in agricultural practices that will secure sufficient food in the future and at the same time contribute to reduced climate change.
Learning activities:
The course is given online. Students read web-lectures individually, submit written assignments weekly, participate in online discussions and receive feedback from the teacher.

Recommended prerequisites:
Knowledge of agronomy and environmental issues.
Assessment:
Exam in ENGLISH ONLY. Students will be evaluated on the basis of weekly short assignments (30 %), participation in discussions (10%) and a final term paper (60 %). All assignments must be handed in prior to submitting the term paper.
Nominal workload:
Total student time is estimated to be 150 hours.
Entrance requirements:
Minimum requirements for entrance to higher education in Norway (generell studiekompetanse)
Reduction of credits:
5 credits reduction in combination with discontinued course EDS215.
Type of course:
The course is divided into 10 parts lasting one week each. Students are expected to submit responses to short assignments at the end of every week. The last week is set aside for a term paper. Students are also expected to engage actively in the discussion forums.
Note:
The course has the same content as the discontinued course EDS215. The course is web-based and taught intensively over 10 weeks.
Examiner:
External examiner evaluates the arrangement for grading.
