Course contents:
The course is structured around the topics: lighting theory, lighting equipment, light control, light requirements, night photography and effect lighting related to our physical surroundings such as: footpaths, open spaces/town squares, sports grounds, traffic arteries, facades, terrain, vegatation, sculptures, water elements, cultural monuments and landmarks. General light planning for cities and villages is also included in the course.
Learning outcome:
The students should acquire an overview and knowledge of: lighting theory and the work field in which lighting designers and lighting engineers work - lighting equipment and use of this in outdoor environments. The students should acquire skills that make them capable of making concepts, testing lighting and projecting lighting of outdoor areas. They should acquire skills in creativity, cooperation and independence.
Learning activities:
Lecture series, literature studies, study trips, workshops and project assignments in order to practice creativity, cooperation and independence. The project assignments are as close to real situations in the working life as possible.
Teaching support:
The students will get supervision both individually and in groups.

Recommended prerequisites:
Mandatory activity:
80 % of lectures, study trips, workshops and joint reviews of the exercises. All assignments must be handed in and approved.
Portfolio assessment. The portfolio should include more closely defined excerpts from lectures, literature studies, specifications, workshops, study trips and project assignments. The portfolio is handed in and evaluated at the end of the course. All parts of the portfolio count the same, and the portfolio is evaluated in total.
Nominal workload:
Structured time: 180 hours. Own effort: 120 hours for exercises and literature studies.
Entrance requirements:
Minimum requirements for entrance to higher education in Norway (generell studiekompetanse)

Lectures: 30 hours. Workshops/joint reviews: 100 hours. Excursions: 50 hours.
The course starts up at the same time as the further-educational course in outdoor lighting on the 4th, 5th and 6th of September, 2006 at UMB, and the lectures are joint during these days.
An examiner evaluates the content and structure of the course, including all assignment texts.
