Course contents:
Invited discussions with the main teacher and guest teachers based on book chapters, and journal articles. Assignments, independent studies.The main topics of the course are: Basic problems and concepts in landscape architecture and planning, historical og contemporary. Knowledge base in landskapsarchitecture and -planning. The foundations for arguments on and assessments of landscape and landscape architecture works. Approaches to the landscape concept in other disciplines.
Learning outcome:
Knowledge: the studetns will acquire substantial knowledge og f the discipline"s theoretical and methodological tradition. Skills: The students will acquire training in reading advanced theoretical texts, in reiterating their content and initiating a discussion on the arguments of the text, in light of contemporary professional issues.They shall have acquired some exercise in defining relevant theoretical concepts with which to reflect on their concrete problems in a way that reveals the generalizable aspects of these problems and increases the students" body of references. They will be able to produce good landscape and design evaluations. They must be able to argue well for their design and planning solutions. General competence: Students will be able to communicate and cooperate in an international learning and working environment.
Learning activities:
Discussions initiated by the students and teachers. Supervised or commented written assignments.
Teaching support:
The students receive guidence, both in groups and individually, throughout the semester on request.
Syllabus:

The syllabus will vary according to the studio courses offered to the students parallel the the theory course. Articles and book chapters.

Some basic topics that will be addressed are:

 

1) Introduction: The garden as basic figure of landscape architecture?

2) How does 'landscape' come into being? Knowledge in landscape architecture and planning. Assessment methodology.

 

3) 'The picturesque' as ideal og 'landscape' as cultural object. The value basis of landscape planning.

5) Aesthetics in landscape architecture. Some basic concepts in critiquing landscape architecture works. Gustavsson, E., 2013: 'Meaning versus signification: Towards a more nuanced view of landscape aesthetics'. JoLA 2/2012, pp.28-31.

Prerequisites:
LAA 211 or a similar course in landscape architecture history. At least three project courses. The students should have some experience in landscape analysis. It is recommended to have taken ex. phil (theory of science).
Recommended prerequisites:
It is recommended that the students have completed landscape analyses or evaluations. The students should also have comprehensive design/planning experience from at least three courses.
Mandatory activity:
Two accepted assignments. A minimum of 80% presence and active participation in seminars/discussions.
Assessment:
Assignments are evaluated as with "passed"/"not passed".
Nominal workload:
Total of 150 hours. Structured teaching: ca. 28 hours. Individual study: 66 hours. Assignment writing: Twice ca. 28 hours each.
Entrance requirements:
Minimum requirements for entrance to higher education in Norway (generell studiekompetanse)

An external examiner evaluates the home exam and comments on the course content and structure.
