Developing entrepreneurial mind-sets across cultures- combating youth employment

International experience represents a unique and crucial learning context for students. An international summer school in entrepreneurship and innovation offers you as a student a unique opportunity to gain cross-cultural experience in entrepreneurship and innovation in another country.

The summer school offers students exposure to the South African context and real problems contributing to youth unemployment (In South African the youth unemployment rate is more than 50%). Students will be exposed to a setting at University of Pretoria (UP) (experimental farm), wherein the potential exist to design small enterprises enabling students/alumni to become self-employed. During the school, multi-disciplinary and cultural teams will be introduced to various kinds of small enterprises, incubators and entrepreneurs to assist in designing ideas to create future enterprises to combat youth unemployment.

This course takes cross-cultural action learning as its point of departure within the area of entrepreneurship and innovation. The aim is to gain relevant practical experience and apply academic knowledge in practice.

Highlights and aims:

The summer school strives to empower students through entrepreneurship by knowledge and action-based learning to lessen youth unemployment. The disruptive impact of the fourth industrial revolution could potentially escalate youth unemployment, not only regionally but globally. The summer school’s aim is thus not only relevant to South Africa but also developed countries

Learning outcome:

Students will have knowledge and understanding of:

  • Key concepts underpinning entrepreneurship and its application in identifying and developing opportunities
  • Creativity and design thinking; how to design creative strategies for pursuing, exploiting and further developing new opportunities
  • The socio-economical challenges faced by entrepreneurs in the South African business environment

Students will be able to:

  • Respond positively and effectively to problems in unfamiliar contexts
  • Apply new ideas, methods and ways of thinking
  • Engage with students of different cultures to deliver creative and potential solutions to specific problems
  • Work in student teams with diverse skills and experiences
  • Practice action-based learning  

General competence:

  • You will be trained in cross-cultural learning
  • You will be able to work and collaborate on innovation challenges that the host country is facing
  • You will gain competence to absorb and reflect upon practice-based cross-cultural learning
Learning activities:

Week 1:

Teaching support:
Canvas and local supervision of the student activities in South Africa, University of Pretoria.
The readings consist of required literature and self-selected literature. The required literature will be announced on Canvas before the student leaves Norway. The literature will consist of relevant theory and methods connected to entrepreneurial learning and methods in innovation and entrepreneurship in cross-cultural context. You will find and choose this literature yourself to enlighten the topics you work on. The chosen literature (scientific articles, book chapters etc.) is to be listed on the reference list in alphabetical order.
Recommended prerequisites:
Student enrolled in programs at master level within business administration, economics, entrepreneurship or technical fields.
Mandatory activity:
Compulsory participation in all summer school activities for 2 weeks.Compulsory participation in all visits and social activitiesLogs from reflection upon practice

Reflection report. Reflection report counts 100% of the grading.

The final academic delivery is a reflection report, which is to be written individually in English. The reflection report is graded pass or fail.

Nominal workload:
150 hours.
Entrance requirements:
For students at School of Economics and Business, NMBU and students from HVL and Nord University.

The course lasts two weeks in June/July and evaluation in August.
Cancelled June 2021 due to covid 19 infection control. The course will be given next time in June 2022.
Expert panel in South Africa and assessment of the final reflection report (NMBU).
