Successful commercialisation of R&D is the lifeblood of a knowledge-based economy. Intellectual property rights play a key role in this, enabling innovators to protect the commercial value of their R&D and to defend it against infringement by competitors. The course will consist of six parts:

  • The role of IP in the innovation process (realising the value of your own research, role of the university and the TTO, venture capital),
  • Introduction to IP law (patents, trademarks, designs, copyright) and relevant neighbouring legislation (trade secrets),
  • The patent system (patentability requirements, the patenting process, patent infringement and litigation, maintenance, jurisdictions and fees),
  • IP analytics (EPO and USPTO search tools, patent valuation),
  • IP management and strategy (sales and licensing strategies, aligning IP protection with overall business strategy and competitive strategy),
  • Hot topics (IP and collaborative innovation, IP and data science, IP and biotechnology).  

An important aim of the course is to encourage participants to think about the commercialisation potential of their own research (or R&D projects they are affiliated with). Preferably, the project assignment should focus on potential results of participants own research, evaluating options for IP protection and developing an IP strategy.

Learning outcome:


  • Know the functions of different IP rights and be able to distinguish them,
  • Understand the requirements and processes involved in the patenting of a technical solution,
  • Know how IP has to be defended against infringement,
  • Know the strengths and weaknesses of different IP strategies.


  • Be able to conduct an assessment of the patentability of a technical solution,
  • Know how to use IP search tools to identify prior art and alternative solutions,
  • Be able to use IP valuation tools to estimate the value of immaterial assets,
  • Be able to evaluate different IP strategies and make a choice between them,
  • Be able to implement a chosen IP strategy and formulate a detailed action plan.

General competence:

  • General ability to work in interdisciplinary and cross-functional teams, 
  • General ability to evaluate the commercial potential of R&D results.
Learning activities:
Lectures, guest lectures by legal experts and innovators, legal case studies, flipped-classrom activities, IP analytics tutorials.
Teaching support:
Canvas, flipped-classrom activities, supervision of project groups

Recommended prerequisites:
Mandatory activity:
Class attendance is mandatory. Participants have to be present in at least 85% of the lectures.
Continuous exam, consisting of one project assignment conducted in groups of four participants (weight: 100%). 
Nominal workload:
150 hours. This is a very work-intensive course.
Entrance requirements:
Type of course:
Eight lecture hours per week (2nd-4th week of January). In addition, intensive case work in project teams.
The course will be taught in English. Incoming students can contact student advisors at the School of Economics and Business ( for admission to the course.
External examiner will control the quality of syllabus, questions for the final examination, and principles for the assessment of the examination answers.
