Course contents:

The course shall provide the students with basic knowledge about the role of entrepreneurship and innovation in the sustainable development of future societies and business life. In a world where we face huge social and environmental challenges that needs solving, it seems obvious that business as usual is not an option for a sustainable future. 

Business model innovation is a current discussed approach, to address sustainability challenges, such as those formulated by the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In this course, we will focus on how business model innovation can contribute to new and disruptive solutions that will make a difference. We will use design thinking as a mind-set and approach to develop new solutions that will change how we think about our business model. 

Throughout the course, the students will acquire knowledge and hands on experience on how innovators and entrepreneurs create sustainable value through entrepreneurial and business model activities.

Learning outcome:
The students shall acquire knowledge within chosen topics with main focus on user centric oriented concept business development. The students shall apply this knowledge and course methods to finalize a business concept and sustainable business model for an existing stakeholder. The students shall through creative and collaborative learning develop something of value for themselves and other stakeholders.
  • Understanding and learning the basic essence and tools of business development, evaluation of new products, services and markets
  • Develop skills in business plan writing with its elements as basic market analysis, econmic analysis and profit, and be able to collect and analyse information and apply theoretical concepts
  • Using own knowledge in a new and entrepreneurial setting
  • Developing creativity and innovations skills
  • Developing presentation skills
  • Developing collaborative skills
Learning activities:
The course is based on active participation from the students. The course consists of workshops, experiments, assignments and independent team work on the final presentation. The students are required to form interdisciplinary groups.

Recommended prerequisites:
Mandatory activity:

This course requires an active participation where the students are divided into teams of 3-4 participants.

Each team must present the progress of their project three times. Each student must provide written feedback to the other teams three times. The exam is a final presentation

The basis for the overall evaluation is the team`s Business Model and an individual written reflection report.  
Nominal workload:
187.5 hours.
Entrance requirements:

Minimum requirements for entrance to higher education in Norway. 

Study right at KVU-BEDØK

Reduction of credits:
5 ECTS overlap with INN271 Sustainable Entrepreneurship 
Type of course:
Online course with 4-5 hours lectures per week. Interdisciplinary teamwork and presentations.
External examiner will control the quality of syllabus, questions for the final examination, and principles for the assessment of the examination answers.
