Course contents:
The course content may be divided into 7 sub-topics: a)Feeding/nutrition and management, b)Feed evaluation and feed planning, c)Milk quality and milk hygiene d)udder health and fertility e)Mechanisation, d) Economy e) Animal welfare. Practical assignments based on realistic situations. Students will provide suggestions for improvement based on information from specific businesses. Good solutions require interdisciplinary and analytical skills.
Learning outcome:
Primary aim: To apply the theory of feeding and management of dairy cows and goats to solve problems and further develop milk production following principles of high product quality, healthy stock plus rational and sustainable utilisation of resources. Secondary aims: After course completion, students will be able to provide accounts of: Dimension, structure and economic significance of milk production from cows and goats in Norway, plus the significance of milk and milk products in our diet. Milk synthesis and factors that influence milk yield and milk composition. Milk quality aspects Health and fertility aspects Animal welfare and housing Feed evaluation/evaluation systems The basics of feeding in milk production. Important factors that affect digestion and pollution related to milk production. Important factors affecting feed intake and regulation. Principles/strategies for feeding dairy cows and goats. Principles for feed planning and construction of feed plans. Feeding and management through pregnancy-lactation cycles. Summer feeding. Body condition evaluation as a tool in feed planning. Mechanisation in milk production. Important factors that influence the economics of milk production.
Learning activities:
Lectures and practical studies (group work). The main teaching principle is a modified form of problem-based learning (PBL). In addition, some lectures are provided, partially as summaries and partially as insights into selected topics. Practical studies are vital as a tool to increase knowledge and understanding of central topics. Students will present solutions in the presence of a teacher.

An overview of actuall litterature will be presented at the start of lectures.

HFX130, HFE200, HFE202, HFE203, HFX201 and HFX202.

Excursion and exercises.
Assessment:
Assessment of group work counts 40 % and oral examination 60 %.
