Course contents:
Lectures are given within the learning outcomes associated with dog breeding and normal behaviour in dogs and cats, including behavioural development,social behaviour, communication signals and predation, behaviour and environmental needs and housing conditions for these species. A brief overview of dog breeds is provided. Presentation is given on the main dog breeding methods.It will be reviewed heritability of the most important performance characteristics, behavioural characteristics, health characteristics and genetic defects in dogs.The focus is on problems with breeding in small populations, inbreeding, genetic defects, the balance between inbreeding and selection /improvement of properties.Case studies of student recess are provided. Some lectures are in English (dog behaviour).
Learning outcome:

Knowledge: Students will be able to describe and explain normal behaviour in dogs and cats - including behavioural development, social behaviour , communication signals and predatory and antipredatory behaviour. Students will learn the environmental needs of these three species and how these needs can be met. Students will learn the concept of domestication and how dogs and cats are domesticated. Students will have an overview of breeds and breeding of dogs, knowledge of heritability of performance features , exterior features and behavioral traits in dogs . Students should have knowledge of breeding in small populations , and in-depth knowledge of case studies on the dog.

Skills: Students will be able to use the course material to prevent behavioural and welfare problems in dogs and cats, and understand selective breeding of dogs.

Reflection : Students will understand the importance of expertise in breeding and ethology to prevent behavioural , welfare and health issues , and help ensure that animal husbandry is perceived positively by the owner and that a healthy and sustainable breeding program is in operation. Students will understand the need to acquire further knowledge to work as a consultant , trainer or breeding responsible.

Learning activities:
Students read the syllabus material, provided lectures, and writes a term paper. This provides a good learning process.The lectures are particularly important in this subject because not everything is covered by text books.

Teachers are available to answer questions about the subject matter.The student has a tutor on the term paper.There will bea lot oft echnical material in Fronter.

Assessment:
One obligatory term paper must be delivered. This can be chosen freely within dog breeding, dog behvaviour or cat behaviour, after agreement with a teacher. The term paper shall be about 2500 words and produced as a scientific report with an Introduction, Main part (with relevant sub-chapters), Summary and Reference list. The term paper shall be submitted in Fronter by a deadline at the end of the term. This accounts for 25 % of the total grading. Written exam (3 hours) accounts for 75 % of the total grading.

The course is taught partly in Norwegian, partly in English. 
Examiner:
The censor approves the exam exercises and censures the written exam. Teachers censur the term paper.
