Learning outcome:
The students will gain insight in the following main topics: 1. A history of life on earth. 2. Conceptual structure of evolutionary theory with emphasis on genetic variation, natural selection and adaptation. 3. Speciation 4. Life history evolution 5. Sexual selection 6. Senescence in an evolutionary context. 7. Pattern and process in macro evolution. After completion, the students will be able to use the conceptual apparatus of evolutionary biology to interpret and understand biological processes.
Learning activities:
The course is based on interactive lectures every week. Group work on selected topics will be carried out during the last weeks of the course, followed by in-class presentations and discussions.
Teaching support:
The lecturer will be available for questions during ordinary office hours.

Students should have completed the 200 group in biology, but the course can also be taken by highly motivated students with a weaker background in biology.
Recommended prerequisites:
Mandatory activity:
Participation on seminars. Students will be divided into groups. All groups have to prepare a seminar where a central topic within the field will be presented based on selected scientific papers, followed by a discussion. To secure a fruitful discussion all students have to study one selected key paper beforehand.
Written examination, 3 hours.
