The course introduces bee biology with specific relevance to beekeeping. In addition, bee diseases, forage plants in Norway, honeybee products and honey processing, material, business forms and economics will be covered as well as the use of honeybees as a biological model species. Further the course will focus on the use of honeybees for crop pollination and new research on the relationship between wild bees and honeybees and effects of parasites and pesticides on honeybees. Students will acquire practical experience with ordinary care of beehives, queen breeding, migratory beekeeping and overwintering methods.
After the course the candidate should have acquired:
Knowledge: The candidate should have good knowledge about honeybee biology, honeybee diseases and parasites, forage plants, honeybee products and colony management, including crop pollination by honeybees. In addition, the candidate should have knowledge about the honeybee as a social organism and the relationship between honeybees and wild pollinators. Further, the candidate should have basic knowledge about methods for sampling and diagnostic for honeybee diseases and parasites as well as the use of the honeybee as a biological model species.
Skills: The candidate can manage honeybee colonies as a part of ordinary beekeeping, and also perform simple field experiments for a master thesis. The candidate should have basic skills in production of honeybee queens and processing of honeybee products. The candidate is able to use the acquired knowledge to make justified management decisions in relation to beekeeping
The educational activities include lectures, practical work in the field/lab and excursions to a professional beekeeper and to The Norwegian Beekeepers Association and the honey cooperative "Honningcentralen"
The candidate will, if needed, receive supervision during the educational periods.

Preferably some background in biology.

The course lasts two-tree weeks, the first part in June and the second in August.
External examiner participate in the oral exam.
