The course can be divided into 5 sub-topics, which are presented in the following order: digestion, absorption, intermediate metabolism of the absorbed substrates, productions (growth and lactation) and feed evaluation. Particular emphasis is placed on the relation between the different sub-topics.
Main aims: To acquire knowledge about ruminant physiology and nutrition necessary to understand 1) The relationship between the nutrients consumed and the animals" function, maintenance and production. 2) Principles for feed evaluation. Sub-goals. After completing the course, students are expected to explain: a) Digestion and absorption of carbohydrates, lipids, proteins and selected minerals and vitamins. b) The intermediate metabolism of substrates absorbed from the digestive tract, inclusive lactation and growth. c) Systems for feed evaluation.
The course includes lectures, group work, exercises and individual work. Teaching in Norwegian!

Exercises and journal.
Participation in course exercises including an approved journal is needed before examination. The report from the experiments will account 30% and the written examination will account 70% of the final grade.
