Course contents:
The main challenges for agriculture is to produce sufficient and safe food in a sustainable way for a growing population with changing dietary habits, under uncertain climatic, economic and geopolitical conditions. These main challenges will be elaborated through lectures on: - Historical ideas on agriculture, trade and society through changing times - The resource base for food production globally and nationally - The emergence of agricultural policies - International trade regimes - Developments in the South and assistance from North to South - The origin of our main crops - Plants for food and feed - The resource base and production systems in plant production - Sustainable production systems - Animal products' impact on global and national food production - Animal Productions in an environmental and climate perspective - Bio-economy - profit and sustainability in the green shift - Dietary effects on human health
Learning outcome:
Students will have basic knowledge and coherent understanding about national and global food production.
Be able to use this knowledge in their further studies at NMBU
Enable the students to actively participate in the public debate about the challenges we face.
