HFE306 Advanced Feed Manufacturing Technology
Showing course contents for the educational year 2022 - 2023 .
Course responsible: Dejan Dragan Miladinovic
Teachers: Olav Fjeld Kraugerud, Ismet Nikqi, Egil Prestløkken, Trond Storebakken, Øystein Ahlstrøm
ECTS credits: 5
Faculty: Faculty of Biosciences
Teaching language: EN
Limits of class size:
Minimum 5 students. If there are fewer than 5 students, it can be considered whether the course should be offered with alternative learning methods.
Teaching exam periods:
This course starts in the January block. This course has teaching/evaluation in the January block.
Course frequency: Annually
First time: Study year 2004-2005
The course is mainly based an experimantal feed processing trial at the Center for Feed Technology. A report from the experiment must be handed in, and presented for the class. The reports will be graded. Each student will also hand in an individual report, based on literature study. Topics that will be covered may include: - Grinding - Weighing and mixing - Conditioning and expanding - Pelleting - Extrusion - Cooling/drying
Animal feed cooking often uses the same processes as in e.g. making the cheese-pop, dog food and fish feed, on the same type of machine, an extruder. Student will alone and during the group work recognize and define interesting technologies and renewable feed materials through analysis of existing theories, methods with practical and theoretical problem solving.
- Individual assignment and group work should help to student to describe, possibly illustrate the use of the new processing technologies and the raw materials for a specific animal categories for feed processing
- The principles for how to set up teaching to promote learning are defined by the study of scientific articles that will help to interpret the value in connection with. renewable resources. Scientific work must be organized together with courses responsible for ideas that candidates must come up with
The student shall develop skills that will further profile him/her in an industrial investment and competencies within the production of the feed or the development of novel feed raw materials. In further career, the student will be able to choose which feed ingredients or technologies can be used for new product development. The course content will build-up skills to justify and assess goals or methods and forms of evaluation in the processes of feed technology. Participation in the innovation processes, and communication regarding feed related issues, through advanced work tasks, will be considered and compared to R&D processes in the feed industry.
The student will be ready to guide colleagues or other students and student groups, or develop new specific topics that are not covered by HFE306.
Teaching methods can involve digital forms of learning, classical teaching and short group work. Emphasis is placed on aiming to activate students throughout the experimental planning processMethods in supervision are based on individual assignment and group work, as well as consultation with employees from Fôrtek. These methods will help to the student to better understand feed technology processes and their limitations for assessing the feed raw materials and/or feed technologiesStudents will alone or in the groups receive supervision related to the novel and sustainable feed resources and their relationship to feed technology, so that such knowledge could be of value in further careersAssessment of learning must be recognized and valued through observed interactions by students, interaction between the course coordinator and the student, and all this through submitted group reports, presented group work and individual reportsRelevant feedback on teaching must be given during exercises, group work, consultations with the course coordinator / staff at Fôrtek and during lectures
Lectures and demonstrations. Key elements in the subject's didactics are based on reflection in connection to new raw materials that can, should or already are used for feed manufacturing. Reflection on the relevance of the subject that legitimizes novel raw materials as possible candidates can be integrated into the development of a new feed products. An important part of the course HFE306 is to allow to students reflect on how the course can be learned, taught and further developed. This must be taken directly with students after each lecture, teaching or consultation.
Some material will be handed out. Scientic articles about feed and feed technology will be handed out.
The students must have taken HFE305.
Nutrtion and feed technology
Participation in minimum 70% of the time for feed production. 2 of 3 the weekly-tasks are to be handed in.
Combined assessment. One group assignment and one individual assignment per student. Graded group and individual report, counting 40/ 60 % of the final grade. Both parts of the exam must be handed in.
Special requirements in Science
Type of course:
Lectures will be given when required. We spend 3 days in the pilot plant at Center for Feed Technology to make feed.
External examiner approves the assignments.
