Course contents:
The course covers three main topics: a) The significance and use of our most important forage supplies. b) Factors influencing nutritional content, nutritive value and feed potential. c) Harvesting and conservation methods including grazing. Exercises and group assignments will cover the most central parts of the curriculum.
Learning outcome:
Primary aim: After completing the course, students should be able to account for the main factors influencing nutrient contents, nutritive value, feed intake and uses of the main forages in Norwegian domestic animal production. Students should be able use this knowledge for further developing competence on rational and sustainable forage production, as well as evaluating the social and political aspects of forage cultivation and domestic animal productions based on forage. Secondary aims: After having completed the course, students should be able to account for: - The amounts and significance of the main forage supplies. - The main factors influencing nutritional content, nutritive value and feed potential of the forage. - Principles and methods for forage harvesting and conservation. - Principles and methods for grazing. - Principles and methods for conserving forage. - Social and political aspects of forage cultivation and domestic animal production based on forage: Environmental questions, cultural landscapes and cultivation according to ecological principles.
Learning activities:
Lectures and exercises (group work). Survey lectures and lectures on selected topics are also provided. The exercises will be a fundamental tool for learning and understanding central topics. Students are to present answers to the exercises with a teacher present.

A reading list will be handed out at the start of the course.

Exercises and discussion group assignments.
Written examination counts 60%. Report counts 40%. Both must be passed.
