Course contents:
Introduction to inbreeding, Phenomenon associated with inbreeding, Relationships, Genetic contributions, Minimizing inbreeding, Inbreeding and selection, Contribution of mating to managing inbreeding, Quantitative genetics guide to DNA markers, Using DNA markers in diversity studies, Constructing IBD matrices and their use, Managing inbreeding within genomes.
Learning outcome:


Students can describe: (i) alternative methods to estimate (genomic) inbreeding and relationships, (ii) the evolution of inbreeding, relationships and genetic variances within and between (small) populations, (iii) methods for the management of inbreeding and genetic diversity in small populations.


Students can estimate inbreeding and relationships and optimal genetic contributions using alternative sources of data, including genomic data.

General competences:

The students develop analytical approaches to the management of genetic diversity in small populations, and unravel the contributions of inbreeding, (genomic) relationships and genetic variance to the total genetic diversity. The students should acquire sufficient knowledge to follow advanced courses in the fields of genomic relationships, inbreeding, optimal contribution selection, and the management of genetic diversity.
