The theoretical foundation of geographical information. Representation of geographical information on a computer. Data capture. Principles of presenting geographical information. Geographical analysis. Data exchange and standardisation. GIS software and equipment. Geographical databases.
After completing the course, students should have good knowledge of the theoretical foundation for geographical information systems (GIS) and should be capable of using such tools for collecting, storing, processing, performing simple analyses on and presenting geo-referenced information.
Lectures, exercises and independent study. Most of the exercises include the use of GIS software.

Parts of Longley, Goodchild, Maguire and Rhind: Geographic Information Systems & Science, third edition. Wiley, 2011.
Practical introduction to GIS (LAD102 from 2010), or a similar practical introduction to GIS.
3 hour written exam
Minimum requirements for entrance to higher education in Norway (generell studiekompetanse)
Type of course:
26 hours of lectures. 26 hours of computer laboratory exercises.
An external examiner will assess a maximum of 50 of the answers.
