Course contents:
This field course builds upon GEO210 by applying knowledge of the surficial deposits in Norway, something which is important for spatial planning, identification of geohazards and the use of natural resources. You will learn to use maps and aerial photos for Quaternary geological mapping and in the field, identify and map glacial, glaciofluvial, marine and fluvial deposits, probe sediments in combination with georadar and describe and interpret sediment profiles. The course begins with academic preparations at NMBU and will then take place in field areas in southern Norway. In group work, you will carry out field investigation and write a report, which contains a description of the areas and an interpretation of the Quaternary processes that formed the landscape we see today.
Learning outcome:

Knowledge: After completing the course, you should be able to recognize the most important surficial deposits in field and have knowledge of processes forming common deposits and landforms in Norway.

Skills: You should after completing the course know how to map deposits and landforms, assess their prevalence and characterize the properties by using various field techniques. You should be able to combine maps with other collected field data and provide an interpretation of the geological processes forming these sediments and the landscape in which they occur, as well as their significance for different land uses and geohazards. You should also be able to reconstruct environmental changes.

General competence: After completing the course, you can perform a field project. You can, in collaboration with a small group, write a field report, argue for interpretations and produce graphs and figures.

Learning activities:
Exercises, field work (in groups), oral presentation of results, demonstrations and lectures. The report writing consists of shaping the report, figures and maps, statistically processing simple data and citing references.

Assessment:
Report (that is to be submitted at the end of the course): 100%. Grading system: Pass / Not pass.

Lectures and exercises (indoor): 1 day. Exercises in the field and excursion: 7-8 days. Presentation of results and writing report: 3 days.
