Course contents:
Contents: Description of moving fluids (kinematics). The equation of continuity, the equations of energy and impulse. Stationary flow of incompressible fluid in a pipe and open channels. Loss of mechanical energy. Turbulent flows. Calculation exercises for every subtopic, including submission of work. Laboratory exercises illustrate important current phenomena.
Learning outcome:
The students should understand and be able to describe the principles of the study of fluid flows and apply these to practical problems. Students should be able to apply simple physical laws to a moving fluid, and on this basis give a mathematical description of simple flow phenomena. One should be able to use this for solving problems in connection with the flow of liquids in pipes and channels. The students should be able to conduct simple experiments on moving fluids.
Learning activities:
Lectures, calculation exercises and laboratory exercises. The exercises illustrate the contents of the lectures and are meant to develop practical skills associated with the conduction of experiments on moving fluids.
Teaching support:
By appointment, students will be able to meet the lecturer outside of teaching hours.

Mandatory activity:
11 laboratory exercises during 8 weeks. A report from each exercises must be approved. The report is written jointly by the students in the laboratory group. At least two compulsory exercises will be given. At least two of these compulsory exercises must be approved (at least 60% correct answers).
Assessment:
Written examination with duration of 3 hours accounts for the total grade.
Nominal workload:
300 hours including structured teaching.

Note:
The course is aimed at and adjusted to students at technological study programmes and/or study programmes within the natural sciences, and may be part of a Bachelor"s degree in physics.
Examiner:
The external and internal examiner jointly prepare the exam questions and the correction manual. The external examiner reviews the internal examiner's examination results by correcting a random sample of candidate¿s exams as a calibration according to the Department's guidelines for examination markings.
