Course contents:
The composition of the earth's atmosphere, radiation and radiation balance. Temperature and humidity. Clouds and cloud formation. Precipitation. Wind and wind systems. Global climate and climate change.
Learning outcome:
Students are to understand the basic physical principles that govern weather and climate. The students are to understand the connection between the energy turnover of the earth"s surface and the climate, and how global and local wind systems arise. This includes global climate change, a result of an increased greenhouse effect. The students are to be able to view the earth-atmosphere system as an integrated system governed by the basic laws of physics.
Learning activities:
Lectures, calculation exercises, colloquia and self-studies. In the exercises, the contents of the lectures will be illustrated through simple calculation tasks.
Teaching support:
By appointment, students will be able to meet the subject teacher outside normal teaching hours.
Syllabus:
Name of textbook is given on the course web site before the teaching starts.
Prerequisites:
MATH100 and FYS100 or Fysikk 1 from upper secondary school.
Recommended prerequisites:
FYS101, FYS102 or Fysikk 2 from upper secondary school.
Assessment:
Written examination (3 hours).
Nominal workload:
48 hours per week for three weeks plus exam day: 150 hours including lectures and excercises.

Special requirements in Science
Type of course:
Lectures: 26 hours. Exercises: 26 hours.
Note:

The course is aimed at students who need knowledge of weather and climate in a global perspective, for instance in environment-related studies, ecology etc.

The course will only be given if at least 15 students have signed up by the sign-up deadline.

Examiner:
The external and internal examiner jointly prepare the exam questions and the correction manual. The external examiner reviews the internal examiner's examination results by correcting a random sample of candidate`s exams as a calibration according to the Department's guidelines for examination markings.
