FORN330 have three main topics with focus on techno-economic analysis:

  • Assessment of renewable energy projects,
  • Energy system analysis

In Part 1 an energy generation project development is analysed in accordance with the license requirements and results are presented by groups in an assignment report. The report shall include technological solution(s) that is evaluated in terms of resource, energy production, environmental impacts and economics. (part 2) Energy System Analysis includes energy demand and the theory and practice of methods to determine how the system as a whole can be optimized. Analysis of a single energy system by means of calculation, linear optimization in Excel is conducted and presented in an individual assignment. Students will become familiar with the method and format for scientific literature study through work on relevant articles. Students have the opportunity to receive feedback on a study of relevant literature on the topic of their own master's thesis.

Learning outcome:

Knowledge

After completing the course, the student should be able to: • Describe the functions of the energy system and interconnection with linear equations. • Synthesize and analyze energy systems for alternative energy solutions with regard to techno-economic criteria and choice of system boundary. Apply method for projection of demand for energy services and energy carriers, and potential impact from technological development. • Explain the difference between different energy-economy-environment models. • Explain what characterizes a literature study based on scientific articles.

Skills

  • • The student should be able to use Excel to find learning curves for a technology. • Based on accumulated knowledge and skills earlier in the study, the student must master written presentation of a techno-economic analysis.

General competence

Cooperate and carry out a project in collaboration with other students, and carry out a presentation of the content of a scientific article.

Mandatory activity:
First lecture. Approved hand-ins and participation in company visit.
Assessment:

A 2.5-hour written exam on energy system analysis (counts for 67 %) and continuous assessment, which comprise of techno-economic assessment (counts for 33 %). All of the evaluated elements in the course must be passed to pass the course.

In the analysis of energy development, each group consists of three students. An external examiner will evaluate the reports. Both written presentation and technical-economic analysis will be evaluated and influence the grade. Clarity in sentence and paragraph structure, consistency and information flow through the report, use of references, tables and figures including figure / table text, will be evaluated. In the techno-economic analysis, a description of the method, estimation of energy production, technical solutions and related economic calculations, and description of the environment and aesthetic measures will be evaluated. Discussion and justification for the report's academic recommendation and correlation between introduction, results and discussion affect the grade. At the grade F the group will be able to deliver a revised report and the new grade will then be an average between F and the grade received on the revised report.

Other hand-ins will be evaluated to pass/fail.
