FORN330 have three main topics with focus on techno-economic analysis:

  • Assessment of renewable energy projects,
  • Energy system analysis
  • Scientific writing

In Part 1 an energy generation project development is analysed in accordance with the license requirements and results are presented by groups in an assignment report. The report shall include technological solution(s) that is evaluated in terms of resource, energy production, environmental impacts and economics. Energy System Analysis includes energy demand and the theory and practice of methods to determine how the system as a whole can be optimized. Analysis of a single energy system by means of calculation, linear optimization in Excel is conducted and presented in an individual assignment (part 2). In Part 3 the students conduct a literature review of scientific and other relevant literature about the question the student has chosen for his master's thesis. The results are presented in an individual term paper.

Learning outcome:

Knowledge After completed course, student should have a holistic understanding of the energy system and possess a solid scientific basis for analysis of alternative solutions with respect to designing and performing techno-economic analysis of energy systems.

Skills The student should be able to explain crosscutting issues and planning processes relevant to the development of energy systems, functionality of the energy system and the inter-connection of the different elements (sub-systems) and, the impact of core driving forces of energy demand including energy efficiency.

General competence Based on acquired knowledge and skills, the student should be able to explain the approach used and conduct a oral and written techno-economic analysis of a power plant.

Comments and feedback on hand-ins, review of the exersizes in class and professional guidance in teacher's office hours.

Mandatory activity:
Approved hand-ins, presentation of a scientific article and approved scientific writing.

A 2.5-hour written exam on energy system analysis (counts for 67 %) and continuous assessment, which comprise of techno-economic assessment (counts for 33 %). All of the evaluated elements in the course must be passed to pass the course.

An external sensor will evaluate/grade the techno-economic report. Both the written presentation and the technical-economic analysis will be evaluated and influence the grade. Writing skills will be evaluated with respect to clarity of sentences and paragraph(s), and consistency and information flow through the report. Sensor evaluates use of references, tables and figures including corresponding text. The techno-economic analysis will be evaluated with respect to description of method, estimation of energy generation, technical solution(s) and corresponding economic analysis and description of environmental and esthetic measures. Discussion and arguments supporting the recommendation as well as consistency between introduction, results presented and discussion will affect the grade.
