Course contents:
Emphasis will be placed on practical processes related to the establishment, expansion and operation of wind and hydropower facilities. Technological solutions for wind power on land and in shallow water, floating wind turbines and small and large-scale hydropower plants will be presented. Resource analysis is extremely important, and students will learn about various methods for this (from theoretical modelling to local solutions). Thorough and consistent profitability assessments are important for project realisation, and will thus be extensively covered in the course. Other topics include concessions, (environmental) protection plans and impact assessments (case-presentations), with regard to formal requirements, schedules, cost developments, technological aspects (size, materials, efficiency, performance) and environmental solutions.
Learning outcome:

Knowledge: The course shall provide an in-depth understanding of technological, environmental, legal and resource consequences related to wind power and hydro power as well as the challenges linked to evaluating technical solutions. In addition the students will get an understanding of enlarging and upgraded hydropower plants.

Skills: The student should be able to work with interdisciplinary issues and planning processes. This involves the ability to analyze, synthesize and present knowledge from disciplines such as engineering, environment, finance and law.

General competencies: The student will receive training in written and oral communication of interdisciplinary issues and research results.

Learning activities:

Lectures, seminars, term paper, excursions, discussions, self study.

Teaching is based on lectures (weekly), seminars, term paper, excursions, discussions and independent study. Term paper writing can be done either for individual or group work between two students.

Teaching support:
Canvas. During office hours, lecturers can provide academic supervision to students.
A reading list will be handed out at the first lecture.

Mandatory activity:
Excursions and seminars. Lecture on August 15. Flight ticket and housing during the excursion will only be ordered for students who attend the lecture on August 15.
Term paper (counts 30%), and 3-hour written exam (counts 70 %). All of the evaluated elements in the course must be passed to pass the course.

Students from other study programs than M-FORNY and M-NF can get be admitted to the course if there are seats available.

Students who have been admitted to the course must attend the lecture on August 15 in order to retain their seat. If there are available seats, students on the waiting list will be admitted on August 16.  Flight ticket and housing during the excursion will only be ordered by the faculty for students who attend the lecture on August 15 or are offered admission to the course on August 16 and accept the offer on August 16.

The external examiner assesses all exam answers, but only grades a selection of term papers.
