Course contents:
The course gives a thorough introduction into technical and economic aspects of conversion of energy resources, distribution systems and use of energy and how the Norwegian energy system is designed to supply the society with energy services for stationary and mobile demands. The entire value chains from availability of energy resources, via conversion, storage and user will be covered. The students will though exercises, term paper and oral presentation be trained in how to analyze, describe and present technical, economic and system aspects of different energy solutions.
Learning outcome:


The students will acquire knowledge of energy resources, conversion technologies, distribution and storage of energy, as well as demand for energy services for stationary and mobile use, including basic knowledge of:

  • Revenues, costs and profitability of energy projects
  • Renewable and non-renewable energy resources
  • Bioenergy technologies for heat, power and fuel
  • Passive and active solar energy
  • Heat pumps and geothermal energy
  • Storage and distribution of energy via electricity grid and district heating
  • Different solutions for the transport sector
  • Marin power production
  • Drivers for energy use and future energy demand
  • National and international challenges for the energy system, including efficiency, security of supply, balancing and flexibility


The students shall be able to describe how conversion of different energy resources work together in an energy system and carry out basic technological and economic calculations for different energy resources and technologies.

General competence

The students will acquire competence in written and oral presentation, working in groups and discussions.

Lectures, exercises, seminars, term paper in groups.

Delivered in first lecture.
FON100, FYS100, MATH100, BUS100
Recommended prerequisites:
Mandatory activity:
Seminar and exercise.
Semester assignment (25%) and Final written exam (3 hour) 75%. All the evaluated elements of the course must be passed to get the course approved.
Nominal workload:
Ca.300 hours lectures and exercises, seminars and self study.
Entrance requirements:
Minimum requirements for entrance to higher education in Norway (generell studiekompetanse)
