Course contents:
Topics covered are pests and diseases, the effects of climate change on insects and fungi, invasive species and biodiversity. There is particular focus on common pests and diseases in forests and wood, and countermeasures that can be taken against these. Other topics covered include the direct and indirect effects of temperature and climate change on insects and fungi, and the importance of biodiversity and invasive species for forest ecosystems and ecosystem services.
Learning outcome:

A candidate who has completed the course shall have learned the following:

Knowledge: The student should have knowledge of important fungal diseases and insects that can cause problems in the different forest phases (from regeneration and seed supply, to mature forests and stored timber) and of integrated control of these. Moreover, the student should have knowledge about the importance of fungi and insects in the context of climate change, invasive species and biodiversity.

Skills: The student should be able to apply his/her knowledge of fungi and insects to evaluate management strategies against major pests. The student should also be able to evaluate the importance of climate change, biodiversity and alien species on the functioning of boreal forest ecosystems.

General competence: The student should after completing the course be familiar with the most important roles fungi and insects play in boreal forest ecosystems.

Learning activities:
The teaching is based on lectures and excursions. Report writing is done group-wise with 2-3 students in each group.

Syllabus:
A reading list will be posted in Canvas. All material covered in lectures and on excursions is considered curriculum.

Mandatory activity:
Excursions with subsequent report writing.
Assessment:
3 hours written exam
Nominal workload:
150 hours of work, including lectures, excursions, reports and self-study.
