Course contents:
This course is designed to assist Master’s level learners (students) to get acquitted with different ancient and rich wisdom traditions exploring International Relations (IR) in its many forms, traditions that has often been neglected in main-stream international relations, thus contributing to a wider understanding of international relations in a world where the balance of power is shifting and countries as India and China are increasingly growing in importance
The course will explore selected classical international relation-related theories or insights within Chinese, Indian, Islamic and African traditions. The topic covered will also include peace spirituality in various wisdom traditions (Hindu, Buddhist, Taoism, Confucianism, and Islam) including philosophical foundations of Kautilya, Mahatma Gandhi, Mother Teresa, Buddha, Ibn Khaldun, Nelsen Mandela, Lao-Tze, Confucious’s socio-cultural, spiritual and political thoughts and practices relevant for international relations. After each lecture class with the topic stated above, the next class will consist of various reflective activities on the previous lecture topic. The activities are group discussions, popular presentations, TED talks, documentary films, short movies, and science-based contemplative sessions. The reflective exercises of students are for creating a space and opportunities for learning with openness and deep introspection of various wisdom traditions. The course demands an active engagement for critical reflections and individual journaling of experiences as group work and also using first-person inquiry approaches.
Learning outcome:
To be familiar with peace spirituality in various wisdom traditions (Hindu, Buddhist, Taoism, Confucianism, and Islam). Understand the context, purpose, philosophical foundation, and wisdom of Kautilya, Mahatma Gandhi, Mother Teresa, Buddha, Ibn Kaldhun, Nelsen Mandela, Lao-Tze, Confucious’s socio-cultural, spiritual and political thoughts and practices relevant for international relations. Be familiar with contemplative and other practices relevant to an individual transformation that have relevance for conflict transformation, peacemaking, peacekeeping and peacebuilding
