The course has two main themes: the content and the process of strategy development. The course covers the foundations of strategic choices related to the sources of competitive advantage and growth mode, as well as the process of strategy analysis and formulation.
This course advances your understanding in the core areas of strategy development applicable to a wide range of different types of organizations and industries: strategic choices in relation to sources of competitive advantage and organization¿s growth mode, and the process of developing a sound strategy.
By presenting, discussing and applying theories/ perspectives in strategic management in various industry and organizational contexts, you will develop an understanding of why some firms succeed in competition and others do not. The course will strengthen your skills in using different methods in the analysis of external and internal environment, avoiding the pitfalls in strategic decision making, choosing the appropriate strategies and formulating strategy statements. You will learn to tackle the uncertainty and trade-offs that management must deal with in strategic decision making. You will get insight in the importance of strategy in relation to your further specialization studies. This course builds on the recent research on the resource-based view of the firm, companies¿ growth modes (alliances, buyer-supplier relationships and corporate entrepreneurship), strategic problem solving and decision making.
The students are encouraged to acquaint themselves with the theory before each lecture in order to participate in discussions and exercises in the classroom. The literature for each lecture is given at the course program. The students apply the theories on cases and discuss and present key literature in small groups.
You will receive feedback on your progress based on the presentations in the class room. The teacher is available via e-mail and during the lecture days for questions and supervision. Repetition lectures at the bachelor-level are organized if min. 20 students express their need for repetition.

AOS 130 (Introduction to organization theory) or similar knowledge, and AOS 237 (Introduction to business strategy) or similar knowledge. It is expected that the participants are able to read scientific literature, i.e., scientific articles, in English.
Knowledge in marketing strategy and microeconomics makes it easier to understand the theoretical foundations of strategy.
This course requires intensive studying. The participants will be organized in small groups and each group will present and discuss articles and assignments in classroom. The participation in 90% of the lecture days is compulsory in order to be able to take the exam. Students who arrive later than the second day of the course will be dismissed from the mandatory activities. Mandatory activities are only valid for the teaching semester and at the following retake exam.
The assessment is based on a term paper in small groups (30%) and a 30 hours individual written home exam (70%) at the end of the August block. Please notice that the home exam starts already on Sunday if the August block ends on Monday. Both term paper and home exam must be passed for passing the course. A retake exam is organized in the following semester for those students who passed the term paper but failed the individual home exam. This retake exam (70% of the total grade) is a written individual exam (3,5 hours), not a home exam. The grade for the term paper is valid only for the semester when the assignment was written and at the following retake exam.

The course will be organized in August with 3-5 hours structured activities per day (approx. 30 hours of structured activities, and in addition work in small groups). If more than 20 students express the need for repetition, repetition lectures are organized at the end of the each lecture day for those who feel they lack solid knowledge of central concepts and theories in strategy from the bachelor level. Please notice that this knowledge is needed to read the syllabus and to solve the assignments.
External examiner will control the quality of syllabus, questions for the final examination, and principles for the assessment of the examination answers.
