In the lectures, photosynthesis will be thoroughly covered and emphasis will be put on plants" adaptation to UV-radiation. In addition, it will be discussed how spectral quality and photoperiod is sensed by various photoreceptors , and how this regulates growth and development of plants. The contents and the arrangement of the course can, to a certain extent, be adapted to the interests of the students.
Knowledge: The students shal have a thorough understanding of photosynthesis. In addition, they should learn how light by different photoreceptors regulates growth and development of plants.
Skills: The students will be able to use advanced equipment for measurement of light (both light level and spectral quality) and various methods for measurement of photosynthesis.
General competence: Students should be able to evaluate how light level, spectral quality and photoperiod affects growth and development in plants.
An overview of the theory will be given in the lectures. More specific topics will be covered thoroughly in seminars/colloquia where the students will play a more central part. The work in the lab is an important part of the course. A large part of the laboratory work will consist of a project in which the students themselves will participate in the planning process. The results should be presented in the form of an oral powerpoint presentation for the whole student group and in the form of a research article.
To a large extent, the teacher will be available for more individual guidance, especially in connection with how to write the research article.
Selected chapters in "Taiz & Zeiger (6.ed.) Plant Physiology and Development" and in additon review articles will be handed out.

Oral presentation of scientific article.
Written exam (3 hours) counts 2/3 of the grade. Scientific article delivered as a group work counts 1/3. All of the evaluated elements in the course must be passed to pass the course.
Structured lectures: ca. 100 hours. The students" own contributions in the form of presentations, article writing, poster work, preparation for study groups, reading for the exam etc.: ca. 150 hours.

The will be approximately 26 hours of lectures, 24 hours of seminars/study groups and 50 hours of laboratory work. In addition, the students receive individual guidance in presenting their results in the form of a oral powerpoint presentation for the whole student group and a report of the project work written as a research article.
An external examiner is used in the evaluation of the written exam and the scientific article.
