Showing course contents for the educational year 2015 - 2016 .

Course responsible: Knut Asbjørn Solhaug
ECTS credits: 10
Faculty: Department of Ecology and Natural Resource Management
Teaching language: EN, NO
(NO=norsk, EN=Engelsk)
Limits of class size:
Minimum 5 students and maximum 10 students. If there are fewer than 5 students, the course can be offered as an independent study.
Teaching exam periods:
This course starts in Autumn parallel. This course has teaching/evaluation in Autumn parallel, .
Course frequency: Annually. Will not be offered in 2016.
First time: Study year 2003-2004
Preferential right:
-
Course contents:
In the lectures, photosynthesis will be thoroughly covered and emphasis will be put on plants" adaptation to UV-radiation. The laboratory exercises will be arranged as a project where the students, under guidance, learn how to use modern photosynthesis measurement equipment and present the results as a scientific article, a poster and a short lecture. Parts of the syllabus will be presented in groups/colloquia. The contents and the arrangement of the course can, to a certain extent, be adapted to the interests of the students.
Learning outcome:

Knowledge: This includes a thorough introduction to photosynthesis. In addition, great emphasis will be put on plants" adaptation to UV-radiation.

Skills: The students will learn to use different methods for measuring photosynthesis (chlorophyll fluorescence, measurement with oxygen electrodes and infrared gas analysis) and in addition learn to measure the spectral composition and light strength for both daylight and artificial light (spectrometers, sensors, data loggers etc. will be used).

General competence:  The aim is for the students to achieve a good understanding of the different aspects of photobiology of plants.

Learning activities:
An overview of the theory will be given in the lectures. More specific topics will be covered thoroughly in seminars/colloquia where the students will play a more central part. A large part of the laboratory work will consist of a project in which the students themselves will participate in the planning process. A significant part of the relevant methodology will be used in this project, and the results should be presented in the form of a poster, a short oral presentation and in the form of a research article. The use of computers will be important when collecting results from the experiments.
Teaching support:
To a large extent, the teacher will be available for more individual guidance, especially in connection with how the poster is to be made and the research article written.
Syllabus:
Selected chapters in "Taiz & Zeiger (5.ed.) Plant Physiology"  and in additon survey articles will be handed out.
Prerequisites:
BOT130 and BOT240.
Recommended prerequisites:
BOT200 and KJB201.
Mandatory activity:
-
Assessment:
Written exam (3 hours) counts 2/3 of the grade. Presentation of the lab results counts 1/3 of the grade. The presentation of results will consist of an oral presentation, a poster and a scientific article. All of the evaluated elements in the course must be passed to pass the course.
Nominal workload:
Structured lectures: ca. 100 hours. The students" own contributions in the form of presentations, article writing, poster work, preparation for study groups, reading for the exam etc.: ca. 200 hours.
Entrance requirements:
Special requirements in Science
Reduction of credits:
-
Type of course:
The will be approximately 20 hours of lectures, 30 hours of seminars/study groups and 50 hours of laboratory work. In addition, the students receive individual guidance in presenting their results in the form of a poster/oral presentation/research article.
Examiner:
An external examiner is used in the evaluation of the written exam. When evaluating the student presentations, examples will be sent to the external examiner.
Allowed examination aids: No calculator, no other aids
Examination details: One written exam: A - E / Ikke bestått
