Course contents:

The course can be extended to 15 credits for students that are interested in writing a term paper. These 5 credits will be given as special syllabus in agreement with the teacher.

The course focuses on the development of higher plants, and addresses physiological, molecular and cellular processes. Particular attention is given to organization of life processes, and the importance of intra- and intercellular transport and signaling.

Learning outcome:
The course provides opportunities to develop insight into the growth and internal organisation of plants, and into their responses to spontaneously generated or climate-induced signals. The course stimulates the development of skills in presenting and discussing scientific material.
Learning activities:
Lectures, colloquia (optional), student seminars, writing of term paper.
Teaching support:
Access to teachers outside lecture hours after consultation.
Syllabus:
Selected chapters/publications: (1). Taiz and Zeiger - Plant Physiology, latest edition. (2). Buchanan et al. - Biochemistry and Molecular Biology of Plants. (3). Primary Scientific Literature. Buy (1), the rest comes as handouts (ca. 25 primary research papers + 3-5 book chapters).
Prerequisites:
BOT200 or middle-upper level plant physiology, plant biology, cell biology. Please note that it is not sufficient if you only had basic courses in plant physiology and cell biology.You should have minimally succesfully passed BSc or MSc courses with very good results.
Recommended prerequisites:
Interest in, and good knowledge of the principles that underlie plant function and organisation.
Mandatory activity:
A 30 minute pptx seminar on one recent important scientific publication.
Assessment:

Continuous assessment: Oral examination counts 50 % of the grade and an oral presentation counts 50% of the grade.

Lectures: 26-30 hours. Colloqia 4 hrs. Seminars 6-8 hrs. Literature study & writing term paper. Preparations for oral exam (lectures, ca. 25 primary research papers, 3-5 book chapters).

The course is at the interface of molecular, cellular and developmental biology.

Examiner:
An external examiner (to be determined) assists in the oral exam and in the evaluation of the oral presentation and the term paper.
