Field demonstrations, field teaching, independent field work exercises, lectures, group discussions and oral presentations, and writing of an individual term paper.
The main goal of the course is to give solid knowledge about plant diversity, reproduction, nutrient uptake, life-history strategies, anti-herbivore defence, and population dynamics. A substantial part of the course takes place in the field and will thus give the student insights into the integration between ecological theory and field methodology.
Understanding of ecologic theory and mastering of different methods to study plant ecology and diversity. The student should also be able to write scientific reports and give oral presentations of such reports.
The course gives the student a good and strong base of knowledge which is useful in further studies in ecology and management of natural resources. Thiis competence is also relevant for further studies in other plant-related disciplines.
Exercises and demonstrations in the field, seminars and in class oral presentation of results from the field-exercises, individual writing of a term-paper.
The candidates\' learning can be supported by supervision during the field exercises and during the writing of the term paper.
Gurevitch, Scheiner, and Fox. The ecology of plants. Other selected literature. A high quality flora such as e.g. Lid: Norsk Flora- or Gyldendals Store Nordiske Flora is recommended strongly.
BOT100 and ECOL100.
Participation in exercises and in class presentation of results. Also the seminars are mandatory.
The examination consists of approval of field reports, result presentations, and seminar activity. In addition the candidate has to deliver an approved term paper. All parts must be approved to pass the course.
Structured lectures: 90 hours. The students" own contributions in the form of field work, field reports, reading and writing of a semester thesis etc.: 210 hours.
