The exercises include demonstrations, calculations, lab exercises and are intended to give the students practice in conducting basic genetic analysis and experience in central techniques of molecular biology.
The students will get training in the basic genetic analyses and laboratory work that is conducted within genetics/molecular biology. The students are also to understand the theoretical principles behind the experiments/exercises.
In addition to exercises, there will be calculations, review of exercises and lab work.
Supervised exercises. Teacher is available at designated hours, announced on the course website.
The exercises, mostly from the textbook used in BIO120: Klug, Cummings, Spencer and Palladino: Essentials of Genetics, 7.ed., 2010, Pearson/Prentice Hall. In addition a Lab booklet.
General chemistry equivalent to KJM100. The students need to have completed BIO120 or take BIO120 concurrently with BIO121.
Previous knowledge of cell biology (BIO100) and microbiology (BIO130) recommended.
Attendance (at least 90%) at excercise classes is compulsory.
Approved lab journal from the molecular genetics lab, and 2 sets of calculation assignments approved. Both parts must be passed. 90% attendance at exercises is compulsory.
Exercises: 3 hours per week for 9 weeks (27 hours), self-study: 123 hours.
