This course will provide an overview of key organization design topics. The course will focus on the organization of modern knowledge intensive firms and the simplification of complex organizational structures. Other topics covered include the linkage between strategy and organizational structure - and between work processes and structure; traditional and new organizational forms; and the planning and execution of organizational re-design processes (i.e., reorganizations).
- Knowledge related to key theories, frameworks, and methods in this area
- Understanding of the linkage between strategy, organizational structure, and work processes
- Awareness of leading-edge, analytical tools and methods (e.g., DSM analysis, functional analysis/axiomatic design)
- Be able to identify criteria for new organizational models (e.g., based on the corporate/business strategy and other drivers) and develop alternative organizational models that can fulfill these criteria
- Be able to evaluate key assumptions related to key concepts/frameworks/theories, as well as identify similarities, differences and linkages across different concepts/frameworks/theories
- Be able to suggest an approach to resolve key organizational challenges (that one may encounter in practice) using course concepts (e.g., utilizing concepts, frameworks and methods from the academic literature).
- Be able to present and discuss ideas and concepts verbally to a group in an effective way
- Be able to describe and critique ideas and concepts related to this topic in writing using effective language
- Increased awareness of the importance of effective organizational design
- Increased awareness of one's own knowledge and skill level
- Increased motivation to further develop one's knowledge and skills in this area
- Increased interest in the scholarly literature in this area (and the ability to locate relevant sources for studies, methods, and tools)
- Awareness of professional networks, associations, conferences etc.
This will be a "seminar" based course with extensive use of examples, cases, exercises, discussions, and simulations. Active participation is expected.

AOS333 (Organizational theory) and AOS237 (Business Strategy) or similar.
Participation (20%), assignments (30%), final written exam (50%). A retake exam is not organized in this course. Those who do not pass need to take the whole course next time the course is organized.
