Jan var instituttleder før ved Institutt for Miljøvitenskap, som har formet et fakultet med Institutt for Naturforvalting i januar 2017. Tidligere var han Senior Lecturer i akvatisk økologi (UNESCO-IHE Delft, Nederland, 1989-2001), Associate Professor i akvatisk og landskapsøkologi (Institute for Environmental Studies, VU University Amsterdam, 2001-2010) og professor og gruppeleder i ‘Earth Sciences and Economics’ ved samme VU University før han kom hit. Jan var også editor in chief av tidskriftet Aquatic Botany fra 2001-2016.
Jan har stor interesse for tverrfaglig samarbeid og vil fortsatt søke muligheter for dette. Han vil gjerne bidra til et publikasjons- og samarbeids-orientert arbeidsmiljø, på tvers av institusjonsmurene.
