  • Science

I started by identifying genes involved in seed development and cell identity, screening gene collections to isolate genes crucial to function and gene regulation for identity of epidermal cells (DEK11, LTP2, Des52), identified the ESR genes3,4 part of the CLE (CLV3/ESR) gene family5,6and showed how GASA47 and DEK18 are crucial for meristem identity and functions in plants. My interests have shifted to studying development of sugar kelp, exciting since science of macroalgae is lagging far behind land plants and animals9. We have followed single cell divisions from zygote through young embryos10 and are currently developing a model explaining early developmental control and possibly flexibility. This will be combined with the first transcriptomic mapping of this development, while the annotated full genome sequence is expected published soon (Mark Cock pers. com. 2019-21). We have used and given webinars on techniques such as microarray&RNAseq, marker studies for gene regulation11, RNAi12 and Genome editing13. On the applied side I collaborate with Jihong Liu Clarke on antibody production for oral vaccinations from lettuce and planned basic studies including genome editing in tobacco plants.
