Ole Jørgen Hanssen is senior research scientist in NORSUS (Norwegian Institute of Sustainability Research) and has been part time professor at NMBU since 2010 in renewable energy and circular economy. He is educated as biologist at University of Oslo in 1981, worked with the Ministry of Environment with focus on nature conservation between 1982 and 1987 and was the first employee in Østfoldforskning (now NORSUS) from 1988. He has a dr. techn. in Life Cycle Assessment and Management (LCA) from NTNU in 1997, and was associated professor in the Industrial Ecology program at NTNU from 1997-2005.

Ole Jørgen Hanssens main research areas has been within preventive environmental strategies for the industry, life cycle assessment methods and applications within a broad specter of applications. He has worked with food waste minimization, waste statistics, assessment of waste treatment technologies (e.g. biogas), policy and regulations, consumer behaviour and in the last years how to integrate area use and transformation with focus on biodiversity impacts in LCA. He is now involved in further development of circular economy at NMBU.

Ole Jørgen Hanssen is a member of the board of Norwegian Center of Circular Economy (NCCE) and has former been both board member in Avfallsforsk, board member and chairman of the board in Emballasjeforsk, Energiforum Østfold and Klimapartner Østfold. He has also been member in the committee for strategic research and innovation in the Danish Ministry of Knowledge in six years.
