My current PhD project examines the unfolding of mineral mining in the southern Ecuadorian Amazon. Drawing on long-term ethnographic fieldwork, I analyze the socio-political dynamics of a contested gold mining rush in a highly bio- and cultural diverse region. I am particularly interested in how indigenous (Shuar) groups navigate their long-term struggle for territorial sovereignty and political autonomy at the extractive frontier. I apply an interdisciplinary approach with emphasis on perspectives from social anthropology, political ecology/ontology/economy, science and technology studies and decolonial theory.
